A concept that I have just become aware of is Gamers having a kind of "Off Season" between Thanksgiving and New Years. This Holiday break seems to be pretty popular this year and I guess I'm a little surprised that I've never heard of it before.
Personally I don't like the idea one bit. I get enough of off season with sports, and one of the things that is great about gaming is that it can be done regardless of season or weather. However, I realize that as the majority of the gaming population gets older real life gets in the way.
So my question to all of you is, do you take a holiday break? If so then what has necessitates the break? How long of a break do you take, and what do you do to satisfy your Gaming itch during the layoff?
It depends on my gaming group. One of the most intense games was a multigame crossover session lasting 15 hours on New Year's Eve. Of course, the campaign had been seven years and they were finally at the penultimate confrontation with all of the big baddies. They wanted to crush the villains in the worst way. And they finally managed to as the New Year arrived. It was surreal.
ReplyDeleteOn the average, I think a break can also be a good thing. So many things come up unexpectedly around the holidays with players' schedules, it is just easier for everyone to take a break.
Ciao!
My group takes time off around the second week of December through New Years, and returns to gaming the week after New Years.
ReplyDeleteOur group has always had a "family first" approach to how and when we game, picking Sunday nights as our gaming night (because it effects people's plans the least) to re-scheduling games for family events, etc.
Our winter break is us putting family first during the holiday season, going to family and company parties, shopping, etc.
During that time, we spend a lot of time talking about getting back to gaming, and the GM's of our group use that time for planning and campaign upkeep.
No holiday break here. Not that we don't love our kids and wives, but everyone in our group sees the great from "real life" as an important part of our lives. Keeps us from getting too stressed out about things. I think everyone needs a hobby that allows them to do that.
ReplyDeleteWe took off the whole of December this year. It mainly boiled down to we had too many conflicting events and it was simpler to just cancel the whole month than try to schedule around them.
