Free Map Monday - New Free Continent Map

Another great blank map that is free for your personal use.  This is another free continent map and this one is devoid of city/town markers, mountains, forests, or anything else which leaves you free to add anything you want to the map with ease.

Enjoy!

  1. A very nice map, the continental shapes readily allow for a rich campaign setting, especially once one adds the other terrain features needed to complete the map. I especially appreciate the large bays in the west and south, the central bottleneck (a NE-to-SW mountain range in there would be perfect), and the possibilities for cultural interactions between the inner coastlines of the smaller land mass and the main continent would be superb with all those mid-sized islands in the channel as well - Pirate campaigns anyone?

My question for you (and your readers as well) is do people actually use such a map as you've provided? Or in other words, other than providing you with some enjoyable time spent doodling a blank map, is the resulting image actually used or even useful to anyone visiting your blog?

I am not criticizing your activity or the quality of the map, I am literally curious as to if people actually value them and use them after you put them online?

I for one enjoy looking at them, but have no plans to use them in any game I run.

  2. @Spiralbound: For someone like myself? Absolutely useful. I have a campaign setting I was looking to create for a possible game. However, I tend to lack the artistic skills needed to craft a decent overland map (That and the software, sans simple pencil/paper).

But, with this map, I could save alot of time and craft my world around this layout (Not that hard since I'm just starting it).

Though, if I may ask, was it Campaign Cartographer that was used to make this? Or some other program?

  3. @Spiralbound - I'm glad you like the map. Your question is an absolutely valid one, but I can't tell you if every week's map is use. You've certainly got me wondering. I enjoy cartography and doing maps, but they also take time. The reason I do them is because I remember all too well a time when I couldn't make a map to save my life. Back then I would search endlessly for one someone else had made. It was always a frustrating search because they would always have things on them that I would try to erase, but that would usually ruin the map. That's why I leave them blank so people can fill in their own stuff without issue. I'm trying to help others, but maybe I'm not helping as much as I had thought.

@Geekbob - I'm glad someone chimed in that they are using the map. I hope it helps you build a really awesome campaign for your players.

As to Campaign Cartographer, it is a really cool program that I haven't used in quite some time. There are a number of reasons that I stopped using it, but in the end I think it just comes down to personal preference. I use Photoshop and Illustrator almost exclusively now when making maps. I really like the freedom and flexibility they offer.

  4. I'm another gamer for which these blank maps are useful. I'm planning on starting my next campaign off by generating the setting as a group with Dawn of Worlds, so maps without mountains, forests, cities, etc., are perfect for that. Blank maps like these are rare, so I'm super-excited that I've found these.
